Volunteers Needed for Vintage High School SC21 Classes
Vintage High School needs volunteers from the community to support the Napa Valley Unified School District's SC21 classrooms. SC21 is the district's Student Centered Twenty-First Century Initiative, which focuses on project-based-learning and technology tools in the classroom. At the heart of this curriculum is the community. Volunteers are always welcome to come to the classes and help evaluate projects, sit on panels or even guest lecture. For example, Elizabeth Hawkins, an SC21 Biology teacher, is currently looking for community volunteers to sit on a panel during her students' Evolution Wars Mock Trial presentations. She would like to have a lawyer, judge, biologist or any interested community member help evaluate the projects.
Since the projects shift with each new set of content standards, volunteers are needed in different courses throughout the school year. Vintage High School has set up a website with updates for community members who want to volunteer their time. It gives information on current classroom projects and each classroom's need for volunteers. This year, Vintage High School has two classrooms participating in the SC21 Initiative - Biology and Integrated Science 4. In the fall of 2008, three more Vintage High SC21 classrooms will be added - Chemistry, English and World History. If you are interested in becoming an active member in Vintage High School's SC21 community, please visit our website at:

Linking the students' education to the community is a great investment in everyone's future! Thank you for your time and interest.
NapaLit
NapaLit, Napa's non-profit literacy connection, is on the look-out to increase our board membership. We're in our second year and programs are coming together to provide story times, free books and a number of other services to children throughout the Napa Valley. We need more active and interested board members to help with these goals.
Board members should be prepared to commit to a monthly board meeting and a small monthly financial commitment. More information on NapaLit can be found at our website: www.napalit.org and for specifics about board positions, please contact Roberta Goodin, Executive Director, at: roberta@napalit.org
Become a CASA
Volunteers are the heart and soul of CASA, A Voice for Children. You'll find being a CASA volunteer is a tremendously gratifying and personally fulfilling experience that not only touches the life of a child but yours as well.
As a CASA volunteer, you'll:
- be directly involved with your case until its conclusion
- establish and maintain close contact with children, parents and/or foster parents,
social workers, teachers and others
- submit written recommendations to the court outlining what is best for the children
Throughout the legal process, you'll serve as the "eyes and ears" for the judge, and ensure that the children do not become lost in the court system.
CASA, A Voice for Children, has three types of CASA programs. Through the core CASA program, advocates help children reunify with their biological parents, or if that is not possible, get adopted by a loving family. You may also choose to work as a CASA Monitor. CASMs work with older youth who need mentors to help them prepare for adulthood. Other advocates choose the CASA/Educational Surrogate program and focus on helping children succeed in school.
Serving as a CASA requires approximately 4 to 15 hours a month -- a commitment that comes with the satisfaction of knowing you're making an immediate and often lasting difference in a young, impressionable life.
